presents The 9th Annual Hispanic Health Issues Conference and 2nd Annual SC Cross Cultural Healthcare Conference
Hispanic Health in Times of
Change: The conference will be held in Columbia, SC on May 1, 2008. The South Carolina Cross Cultural Healthcare Project is designed to increase the cultural competency of nurses, with a primary focus on delivery of quality healthcare to the state’s growing Hispanic population. At this conference, participants who attended the fall conference will have the opportunity to present their research projects in a poster session. They will also have the opportunity to write an article about their project, personal learning or impressions of the process of leading a research initiative in a conference monograph. This year’s speakers will include Edilma L. Yearwood, PhD, APRN, BC, FAAN and Dr. Elena Rios, MD, MSPH. Edilma L. Yearwood is an Assistant Professor at Georgetown University School of Nursing & Health Studies where she teaches undergraduate Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. She is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Nursing with over 25 years of experience in clinical practice and nursing education. Her research interests include the mental health of minority and immigrant children, adolescents, and vulnerable families. Dr. Elena Rios currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hispanic Medical Association, representing Hispanic physicians in the United States, and as Chief Executive Officer of the Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools, Inc. The mission of both organizations is to improve the health care of Hispanics across the nation. Dr. Rios has lectured and published articles and has received several awards on health policy, including awards from the Department of Health and Human Services, Hispanic Congressmen, and California Hispanic organizations and policymakers.
